Deputy Director, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas
Emily Martin is currently the Deputy Director at NARAL Pro-Choice Texas. Emily started as an intern in June of 2013, was hired as program coordinator in August of 2013 and went on to be program director until 2018. With a background in program, education, and training work, Emily oversaw NARAL Pro-Choice Texas’ programmatic work including the volunteer program, outreach and activist trainings. She also established several programs that are still in operation today. One program is the Next Generation millennial leadership program that has seen over 100 participants in six years. Another being ReproPowerTX which was founded in partnership with Lilith Fund in 2015 in Houston and has now expanded to include more partners and cities. This program is what lead to Austin passing a budget amendment to include practical support funding for abortion access. In her most recent role, she moved into more operational work with the organization including supporting the executive director directly with human resources policies, accounting and finance, management and the ongoing needs to make the organization run smoothly on a day to day basis. Through this work, she helped establish a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee that in three months of formation, established a higher base salary for the organization in an attempt to flatten the structure of the organization and maintain the important value of all staff members. This committee continues to evaluate and explore other creative solutions to improve staff equity. Outside of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, she works with other small non-profits to manage their month to month bookkeeping. Emily holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in public health from New York University. She previously interned with the National Institute for Reproductive Health and worked with a clinic that specializes in disordered eating in New York City. She has lived in Austin on and off for 14 years. She lives with her partner and fiance, their two cats Bruce and Gus, and their dog Eli.
