Attendance Agent, Detroit Public Schools Community District
Geno Gresham is passionate about youth development because, growing up, the trajectory of his life was changed because he had a mentor and a tutor. Geno believes education is a human right, regardless of your socioeconomic status. His passion for education can be traced back to his pre-professional days when served two terms as an AmeriCorps Member with City Year of Detroit. During that time Geno efficiently and successfully led a team of nine 17-24 year old AmeriCorps members to achieve tutoring goals with students. Furthermore, he transformed over 500 3rd-8th grade students through ten months of full-time service delivering academic tutoring, behavioral coaching, after-school programming, and whole school initiatives. He also served as a leader with Greening of Detroit’s summer youth program, Green Corps, for five year where he oversaw and coached 80 youth through eight weeks of the summer employment that focused on green jobs for youth in Detroit. Currently, Geno is working with Detroit Public Schools Community District. He works at a local elementary school on an administrative team called the Climate and Culture Team. Geno’s specific role is the Attendance Agent where he is responsible for working closely with students and parents who are identified as chronically absent. In this role, Geno has his feet on the ground creating solution-based outcomes to get students in school and on track. In his spare time, he serves the community of Detroit through his own organization called, Protect Detroit Future. Geno likes to read, play basketball, engage in meaningful conversation, and try new things. He is currently studying for the LSAT in hopes of becoming a lawyer that focuses on educational policy. Geno’s ultimate goal is to run for mayor of Detroit one day.
