PhD student, University of Vermont
Hans Cabra is a Fulbright Scholar from Bogota, Colombia. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Vermont. He is passionate about education policies and programs that can reduce socioeconomic achievement gaps. For example, he is conducting research on the effect of household assets and afterschool programs on educational outcomes such as achievement and attendance in marginalized communities. Hans believes that out-of-school-time programs can close opportunity gaps and learning gaps among children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds by cultivating socioemotional skills, leadership skills, creativity and curiosity. Education, Hans says, gave him an opportunity to escape poverty and ignited a passion for helping young people “pursue their dreams”. Hans hopes to continue to build the right set of skills to bring about a meaningful change in the lives of children and youth in his community in Colombia.
