Hillary Small is a Richmond native and a graduate of George Mason University. With a passion for community development, after living and working in Washington, D.C., she decided to return to her hometown and receive her Master in Public Administration at the VCU Wilder School. She is a current 2nd year candidate and Wilder Fellow at the Department of Elections. Her research interests include ways in which local solidarity economies like participatory budgeting, public banking, community land trusts, and cooperatives can address racial capitalism. Previously, she worked at a variety of large law firms in DC where she discovered a passion for good governance. At Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, she worked as a compliance specialist on a range of issues from multiemployer pensions to foreign lobbying. It was her time living in the Trinidad neighborhood of DC where she began grassroots work around displacement and public housing. She continues that work in Richmond as an appointed member of the Richmond Land Bank. In her free time, Hillary enjoys the beautiful Virginia outdoors by fishing and barbequing.
