Janae E. Thomas, a native of Tampa, Florida, graduated magna cum laude from the Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Real Estate, and Insurance in 2010. She then went on to receive her Master’s in Business Administration and Juris Doctor from the University of Florida in 2013. Janae is currently employed at the Office of the State Attorney for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, as an Assistant State Attorney, where she has been practicing law for the last five years. She has tried over 50 cases. While working as an Assistant State Attorney, she received her Master’s in Public Administration from the University of South Florida in 2018. She is currently a PhD student in Government in the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies at the University of South Florida. Her research interests are in the area of public policy. She received a full scholarship from the McKnight Foundation and attends school full time in addition to her full-time job as an Assistant State Attorney. She recently authored an article that was published in the Washington Post. In addition to her other roles, Janae also manages to spend an immense amount of time volunteering with various organizations. She was Junior League of Tampa's Provisional of the month, she serves as co-chair of the Hillsborough County Bar Association's Community Service Committee, and is Chair of the State Attorney's Speaker's Bureau. In addition, she serves on the Leadership Council for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay and recently traveled to Tallahassee to lobby on their behalf. She was the recipient of the Office of the State Attorney's Inaugural Community Service Award and volunteers over 30 hours each month, in addition to her full-time employment and full time Ph.D. program. She takes time to volunteer at teen court at least once a month and makes it a priority to speak to grade school students whenever possible. She was also recently named one of the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40 for 2020. She is actively involved with USF through the alumni association and Women in Leadership and Philanthropy where she serves on multiple committees. On Friday nights (pre-covid), she goes to Brandon Regional Hospital and assists the nurses with newborn babies in the NICU.
