Janay Hawthorne
Chapter Co-Director Elect, NLC Philadelphia

She previously worked part-time with AFSCME District Council 47 as a College Debt Forgiveness Instructor to educate DC47 union members and the Philadelphia community about enrolling in federal debt repayment plans and debt forgiveness programs.

A Philadelphia native and a third-generation public servant, Janay is passionate about uplifting the Philadelphia community and positively impacting people in any way possible. As a daughter of a teacher and firefighter and granddaughter of Philadelphia police officers, dedication to Philadelphians and progressively improving the city for everyone’s benefit is ingrained in her DNA.

Janay is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; an organization that has cultivated her passion for public service. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Penn State University African-American Alumni Organization of Greater Philadelphia. Janay is also an active union member of AFSCME District Council 47 as a shop steward, and a Public Health Adjunct Professor at Arcadia University.

Janay holds a Bachelor of Science in Bio-Behavioral Health from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology from Drexel University’s School of Public Health.
