Julia Velasco Guerrero was born and raised in Oakland, California. The love for her community motivated her to embark on her career in education. She has been a teacher for Oakland Unified School District for the last six years. While teaching she became an active member in the Culture and Climate Team as well as the Instructional Leadership Team. As a teacher leader, Julia worked alongside her colleagues analyzing state and district test data to identify areas of growth, create SMART goals and a backwards plan to reach them. She led assemblies and other school wide events in support of building a positive school environment that motivated students to learn and prepare them to become leaders. Julia is also passionate about exposing young minds to careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. She worked for the Level Playing Field Institute SMASH program where she facilitated the high school statistics class for students during summer and school year. Julia earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley focusing on Environmental Health and minor in Spanish Language and Literature. While teaching, she enrolled in Loyola Marymount University where she earned her Master of Arts in Urban Education Policy and Administration. She is passionate about social justice, education, technology, public health, soccer and traveling. Julia is looking forward to transitioning out of the classroom to make a broader impact on her community and public education.
