Luciana Morales is a communications professional and agent of change who has called Brownsville home since 2007. Luciana is a Woman International Master (WIM) of Chess and former captain of Peru’s Olympic Team. She was recruited by the University of Texas at Brownsville in 2007 on a full scholarship. There she obtained a bachelor’s degree in government and communications (’11) and a master’s degree in public policy and management (’14). Through her involvement in community initiatives, Luciana has given back to her apted city for years. For instance, in 2013, she licensed and organized TEDxBrownsville, the first independently organized TED event in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2016, Luciana was named one of Brownsville’s 30 under 30 and later that year she licensed a 2nd TEDxBrownsville, this time focused on women empowerment. The event’s theme, Mujeres Moving Mountains, became also the name of a local collective. Luciana serves as Community Engagement & Communications Manager for Workforce Solutions Cameron since 2017. Luciana and her team’s efforts to facilitate job readiness and career exploration to students in Cameron County gained statewide recognition as the Texas Workforce Commission rewarded their S.E.E.D.S. (Students Empowered to Explore and Develop Skills) initiative with the Youth Inspiration and Career Awareness Award in 2018. Luciana is passionate about women empowerment, even more so now that she welcomed her first daughter. She wants to inspire women in South Texas to break the glass ceiling and build other women up. As a former professional chess player, she enjoyed The Queen’s Gambit’s accurate portrayal of chess tournaments and the implications of being a woman in a male-dominated discipline.
