Candidate for MSW, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Martha Lucia Mercado is a community organizer and social worker based in Brownsville, TX. Their educational background includes social work degrees from Austin Community College, Texas State University, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. They are also a graduate of leadership programs such as NEW Leadership Texas and Las Comadres Para Las Americas. Martha is passionate about the redistribution of wealth. They have accomplished this through grassroots fundraising, grant writing, and hosting special events. In previous work, Martha has fundraised for immigration bail funds, abortion access, and homeless families in need. Organizations that Martha has been affiliated with include the Democratic Socialists of America, Grassroots Leadership, and 350 Austin. Martha is also a part of an ad hoc abortion fund called the Buckle Bunnies Fund. This fund is run by queer young Texans and helps provide financial assistance to people in need of abortions across Texas. Other interests of Martha include destigmatizing mental health and the provision of culturally competent and social justice-oriented social work. They have been able to showcase these skills at an inpatient psychiatric hospital where they intern. Martha is excited about being able to grow as a therapist and lend their experience to those going through crises. Connecting and providing hope to others is, above all, what Martha aims to do with their life.
