Exercise Instructor, Brownsville Wellness Coalition
Ricardo Parra is an M.S. candidate in Exercise Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville, TX. He works as a community wellness instructor for the Tu Salud iSi Cuenta! program, an evidence-based framework for targeting obesity and diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley. His experience in dynamic and multi-disciplinary work environments have afforded him a unique perspective into outreach, wellness, and achieving health outcomes. Previously, he worked as a research assistant in the Neuromuscular Performance Lab, where was entrusted by the Director of Health & Human Performance to lead student research mentorship, data collection and analysis, state and national conference presentations, as well as coordinating graduate school discussion panels. A Brownsville native, Ricardo learned his work ethic, dedication, and compassion watching his family support their small business. As a child, he saw it in action every weekend at his grandparent’s outdoor flea market. He was taught the importance of treating people well and offering help when the situation arises. Ricardo received his BS in Exercise Science from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. His current research focuses on using exercise interventions to improve health outcomes in middle-aged adults. Some of his other interests include reading, nature, and coffee.
