Ryan Brown
Campaign Manager, Mai Vang for City Council
Ryan Brown is a local government enthusiast, political consultant, and dedicated history nerd. He currently serves as the campaign manager for Mai Vang, candidate for Sacramento City Council in District 8, overseeing Sacramento’s most competitive city council campaign in recent memory. In addition, he provides support to several other local progressive candidates - including Chinua Rhodes, running for Sac City School Board, and Bobby Roy, candidate for Elk Grove Unified School Board. Ryan also serves as the Communications Director for the Sacramento County Young Democrats.  Originally from the Bay Area, Ryan transferred to Sacramento State in 2015 following a brief stint at De Anza College, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. While at Sacramento State, Ryan was elected as the Vice President of Legislative Affairs for the California State Student Association, organizing students statewide and presiding over the most legislatively successful year in the organization’s history. He focused heavily on promoting sustainable, equitable, and student-focused policy both on the state level and from within the California State University System. Ryan has also served as a member of the Cordova Recreation and Parks District Measure J Oversight Committee since 2016, and was elected as Chair of the committee in 2019. As someone who grew up in an environment where free public parks were the only affordable source of recreation, Ryan is incredibly passionate about environmental justice, preserving our open space, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring that recreation opportunities are never locked behind a paywall.  Coming from a family with a rich military history, but objecting to the national obsession with international war, Ryan enlisted with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 2015. He has participated in numerous public relations and boater safety events, disaster-relief actions, and has been elected as Flotilla Vice-Commander & Public Affairs Officer, as well as Division Communications Officer. He will complete his service in January of 2021. In his increasingly-rare spare time, Ryan practices woodworking - interior carpentry, carving, and furniture-building. He also loves to spend time in Sacramento’s natural beauty, reading, and listening to true-crime podcasts.
