Executive Director, CAIR-NJ
Selaedin Maksut is a third generation Turkish-American Muslim and life long resident of New Jersey. Since 2019, Selaedin has and continues to serve as the Executive Director of CAIR-New Jersey (the Council on American-Islamic Relations New Jersey chapter), America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. In his position as Executive Director, Selaedin works to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. In 2017, Selaedin received his Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from New York University. He then received his Master’s degree in Islamic Studies from Columbia University in 2019. His graduate research focused on the intersection between Islamic political theory and Islamic mysticism (Sufism) in the context of post-colonial studies. Selaedin has traveled to countries like Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and the Balkans for both his academic and traditional studies of Islam and Muslim societies. From 2017 to 2020 Selaedin served as the Vice President of The Muslim Network (TMN), a grassroots New Jersey based Muslim umbrella organization that provides various services designed to build bridges between the Muslim communities of New Jersey. As a young activist, forever-student of the Islamic tradition, and community leader, Selaedin works to defend, educate, and empower American Muslims in New Jersey.
