Shanava Saintolien is a graduate of Florida State University (FSU), where she received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary STEM Education. She currently works as a high school math teacher in Leon County and is a Master of Public Administration Candidate at FSU. Shanava is most passionate about education and homelessness. Outside of her full time teaching position and her graduate studies, Shanava manages her tutoring company, Saint Tutoring. Though Saint Tutoring is a for-profit business, 35% of proceeds go towards the company’s scholarship fund, which was established to support Black women in STEM and will award its first recipient in the Spring of 2021. She created the company with hopes of addressing educational needs she has noticed in black and brown communities, such as mentorship, free/affordable test prep, and supplemental resources for English Language Learners. She aims to provide at least one free event per month such as SAT/ACT prep, or raffle events to allow students an opportunity to bolster their knowledge at no expense. Shanava also began a project called The Community Locker, where she collects gently used casual/business professional clothing and distributes it to those experiencing homelessness in the Big Bend area. Ultimately, she plans to one day work in local government where she will continue to advocate for equitable education, affordable housing, and free/accessible mental health resources in Black communities.
